"For a man who is fasting his senses;

Outwardly, the sense-objects disappear,

Leaving the yearning behind but when, He has seen the Highest,

Even the yearning disappears" (extract from: Bhagavadgita)

What you should know:

Type of holiday: Whatever you want it to be: beaches, wildlife, cities, temples, mountain trekking, spiritual quests

Money - Rupee: You can get by on a tenner a day, but life will be basic.

Around £25 a day will give you a comfortable stay.

Dress: Show some respect! These days a lot of visitors don't.

You'll be in a Hindu and Muslim country, cover your legs and arms in temples and although you can get away with shorts in the more easy going south it will be frowned upon in the north.

Visas: Yes. For six months.

Get them from the Indian Consulate in London (you might need 2 days) or by post.

Call 0207 4373677 for details.

Food: Just plain gorgeous but tone up your spice buds before you go

Women Visitors: It can be hard, but not impossible for lone women.

Expect lots of staring and don't take risks you wouldn't take at home.

Shots: Brace yourself! You'll need Hep. A, Typhoid, Diptheria and Tetanus, Polio and possibly others such as Rabies depending on where you're going.

You'll probably need Malaria tablets too.

More health: What can we tell you? You know all about Delhi Belly.

But if you drink bottled water, wash your hands, avoid salads, ice-cream and meat (especially lamb) you could like me, travel for four months, eat off all the street stalls and not have a moments trouble! Then again...!

What to buy: Clothes are fabulous value, lovely pyjamas, saris or hippy style western clothes.

Depending upon where you go, carved elephants, embossed leather, inlaid wood, jems, silver, carpets, scarves and shawls are likely to be on offer.

A word of advice: Watch out for scams and be prepared to bargain your heart out!

Word of warning: Don't go to Kashmir without checking with the Foreign Office first, despite what other travellers tell you.

It is beautiful and everything is rock-bottom cheap but it could cost you your life if you're not careful.

Little extras: Pens (for the kids) and toilet roll!
